UNCTAD Director contributes to exploratory discussions on a multilateral investment court
On 13-14 December 2016, UNCTAD participated in an expert meeting on the establishment of a multilateral investment dispute settlement system, co-hosted by the European Commission and Canadian Government in Geneva. James Zhan, Director of the Division on Investment and Enterprise at UNCTAD, set the scene for the exploratory discussions by providing an overview of the current international debate on reform of investment dispute settlement.
During his presentation, Director Zhan emphasized: “A multilateral investment dispute settlement system can help pursue key reform objectives. Efforts to reform investment dispute settlement should not lose sight of the bigger picture, the overarching objective of sustainable development and other IIA reform issues, including the substantive treaty content."
