50+ Government Officials Participate in IIA Conference in Baku
Over 50 Government officials from transition economies participate in a two-day regional conference on international investment agreements (IIAs) co-hosted by UNCTAD. During four sessions and one round-table discussion, 17 speakers from government, academia and the private sector share their views on IIAs, the reform of the IIA regime and investor-State dispute settlement (programme).
The regional conference on "International Investment Policies: the Way Forward" is held in Baku, Azerbaijan from 24 to 25 October 2017, and organized by UNCTAD in partnership with the Ministry of Economy of Azerbaijan, the Energy Charter Secretariat and the Transnational Economic Law Research Center (TELC) at the University Halle-Wittenberg (Germany).
Vice-Minister Sahil Babayev, Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and Joerg Weber, Head of the Investment Policies Branch, UNCTAD opened the conference on Tuesday, 24 October.
Objectives of the regional conference:
- To provide decision-makers from countries in transition with an opportunity to discuss the status quo and way forward in international investment law and policy
- To encourage new thinking on international investment policies and treaty making
- To contribute to consensus-building on international investment issues and the reform of the IIA regime
- To allow for the exchange of experiences regarding the management of investment disputes
